Causeway Coast Way
Trail of the Month

Causeway Coast Way

Welcome to the first in our new series celebrating inspiring Long-Distance Walking Trails around the world. Each month, we will team up with expert tour operators to uncover not only the highlights but also the hidden gems and personal favourites that make every trail truly special.

Many fans of the Game of Thrones will already be somewhat familiar with the Causeway Coast through the filming locations at Ballintoy Harbour which appeared as Lordsport on the Iron Islands, and also the cliffs at Larrybane which was the setting for Brienne of Tarth's famous duel before King Renly.

To get to know the Causeway Coast Way better, we asked Jack McKenna from Absolute Escapes to share some of his experiences, seeing that he is a native to the region.

Jack McKenna: Growing up a stone's throw from the Causeway Coast, I can hardly separate my growing love for long-distance trails from my increasing familiarity with the coast path. From the Diamond in Ballycastle to the Barmouth Pier in Portstewart, every step of the trail now feels so much like home, but on a good, clear day, it still delivers an experience to rival anywhere I’ve been since.

The Causeway Coast Way remains a true highlight reel of the North Coast of Ireland, packaged into a neat 50km bundle. Visitors will recognise the Giant's Causeway, Old Bushmills Distillery or the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge — but I always remind them not to bypass the Rock Pools at Dunseverick, Kinbane Castle, or the cows on the beach at White Park Bay.

If you have the time amidst all that, then a trip to Bothy Coffee is a worthy detour from the beach, and Morton’s Fish and Chip Shop is the perfect way to start in Ballycastle. Luckily, you can now sample Maud's Ice Cream at several points along the trail.

Just keep the sea on your right, and remember that signs for the Ulster Way are also your friend on this trail.

We recommend the Rucksack Readers guidebook, along with the OSNI Causeway Coast Activity Map for the finer details.

Many thanks to Jack for sharing his insight and local knowledge of the Causeway Coast Way. If these highlights have you thinking about a future trip, you can learn more with Absolute Escapes.
